Aztecs Volleyball opens 2022 season at NMMI Classic

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (1-3) opened the 2022 season on Friday and Saturday at the New Mexico Military Institute Classic in Roswell, NM.

The Aztecs went 1-3 against four NJCAA Division I programs, which included two nationally ranked teams.

Saturday:

Pima CC Aztecs 3, Amarillo College Badgers 2 (25-27, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 15-11):The Aztecs fell behind 2-1 in the match but rallied with a fourth set win and took the tiebreaker.

(13) Tyler Junior College Apaches 3, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-16): The Aztecs fell in straight sets to the No. 13 ranked Apaches.

Friday:

Odessa College Wranglers 3, Pima CC Aztecs 2 (24-26, 25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 15-10):The Aztecs torok the lead in the first set and then tied the match with a win in the fourth set. They fell short in the tiebreaker.

(2) New Mexico Military Institute Broncos 3, Pima CC Aztecs 0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-23):The Aztecs fell in straight sets to the No. 2 ranked Broncos.

Sophomore Lina Kassimatis finished the tournament with 45 kills, 42 digs and five aces. Fellow sophomore Isabella Jacome posted 133 assists along with 34 digs and 10 aces.

Sophomore Jessica Bright-Schade (Safford HS) had 28 kills and 37 digs while sophomore Deanna Almaguer closed it out with a total of 29 kills and 35 digs.

Freshman Morgan Hains (Canyon del Oro HS) finished with 54 digs and freshman Jalynn Ransom (Salpointe Catholic HS) had 40 digs.

Coach’s quote: “I am proud of the way the girls played hard all weekend. We anticipated the matchups to be tough and they certainly were,” Pima volleyball coach Dan Bithell said. “This tournament always shows us what it really means to compete at a high level, and we were able to do that in many moments. We certainly need to do it for longer and learn to be a bit more efficient. We have an energetic group of girls and I am excited to see where this season takes us.”

The Aztecs will play at Eastern Arizona College in a non-conference match on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in Thatcher.
