Nicoletti nominated for NCAA Woman of Year

(Phoenix, AZ)  Grand Canyon softball’s Gianna Nicoletti has been selected by the WAC Senior Woman Administrators to represent the conference for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year award. The award recognizes graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

The award adds to a long list of accolades for the graduated student-athlete. Nicoletti made the top-30 list for the Senior Class Award earlier this year. She also earned the Stan Bates Award for the WAC as the top all-around female student-athlete in the conference. At GCU, Nicoletti earned the Roland L. Beck Senior Scholar-Athlete award.

Nicoletti, from Fullerton, California, earned her Bachelors of Art in English for Secondary Education, graduating summa cum laude with a 3.98 GPA and is pursuing her Master of Education in Secondary Education with an Emphasis in Humanities at GCU.

The Lopes left fielder was named first-team All-WAC for a second time after setting a new conference record in stolen bases for a season (51). Her accolades did not stop there, as she earned NFCA All-Region first team after leading the Lopes in batting average, hits, runs, on base percentage, walks and triples. She left her mark on the GCU record book after she broke her own single-season stolen-base record and is also the Lopes career stolen base leader. Nicoletti was selected to the WAC All-Tournament team after she helped lead the Lopes to their first ever bid to the NCAA regionals.

Along with her success on field, Nicoletti has excelled of the field and in the classroom. She has completed more than 200 hours of student teaching and was involved with Building Champions Leadership Academy, Feed My Starving Children, the Arizona Special Olympics, and the Miracle League of Arizona – an organization that helps children, teens and adults with disabilities or special health care needs participate in adaptive baseball, at an accessible stadium, removing the barriers that would normally keep individuals of the field.

The Woman of the Year selection committee will next select the top 10 honorees in each NCAA division. The selection committee will then choose and announce the top nine finalists (three from each division). From the nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women’s Athletics then selects the NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named later this fall.
