(San Fransisco, CA) The Pac-12 announced its men’s golf honors for the 2021-22 season as five Sun Devils earned a mention, including its third straight Freshman/Newcomer of the Year.
Leading the way for the Sun Devils is Preston Summerhays who earned Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, first-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman team. Graduate student Mason Andersen and senior Cameron Sisk earned All-Pac-12 first team mentions, as Josele Ballester earned All-Pac-12 first-team and was selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.
Junior David Puig earned second-team honors while junior James Leow was an honorable mention.
It marks the first time in program history having four first-teamers, and the most being awarded the honor since 1994 when Todd Dempsey and Chris Stutts earned first team honors while Larry Barber, Scott Johnson and Cade Stone earned second-team honors.
It’s the third consecutive year that a Sun Devil has won freshman/newcomer of the year, with David Puig winning the award last year. Summerhays joins a special list of Sun Devils to earn freshman of the year, alongside teammate Cameron Sisk (2019), Jon Rahm (2013) and 2003 NCAA Champion Alejandro Canizares (2003). Summerhays has a 71.38 stroke average and a low round of 66 at the Amer Ari Invitational, which includes co-medalist honors at the East Lake Cup.
Next up for the Sun Devil men’s program is earning a bid to the 2022 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club as they will travel for NCAA regional action May 16-18.
