Olson claims Region I crown in Pole Vault as Aztecs Women’s Track sits in first place after third day

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s track & field team completed the third day of competition at the NJCAA Region I Championships on Tuesday.

The Aztecs have a hold on first place in the team standings with 103 points. Mesa Community College is in second with 82 points while Central Arizona College sits in third place with 65. Paradise Valley Community College is in fourth with 16 points and Glendale Community College is in fifth place with 14 points.

Freshman Jaida Olson (Pusch Ridge Christian HS) took home the Region I title in the Pole Vault as she cleared the 3.36-meter mark (11-feet, 0.25-inches) earning 10 team points. The Aztecs snagged the top three spots and earned 24 team points in the Pole Vault as freshman Candice Pocase (Santa Rita HS) took second place with a national qualifying mark of 3.16-meters (10-4.25) and freshman Darien Calicdan placed third at 3.04-meters (9-11.75).

Freshman Jackie Trice (Williams Field HS) earned second place in the Long Jump with a mark of 5.36 meters (17-7) giving Pima eight points. Freshman Emily Felix was right behind her in third place finishing with a mark of 5.35 meters (17-6.75) for six points.

The 4×800 relay team of Sydney Klump (St. David HS), Oksana Giron (Sunnyside HS), Nyah Torres (Millenium HS) and Marissa Lopez (Sahuarita HS) took third place with a time of 10 minutes, 57.10 seconds earning another six points.

Sophomore Mykayla Tarwater (Tucson Magnet HS) gained another third place finish and six points for the Aztecs in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 52:36.48.

Other Pima finishes that earned team points:

Eliza Littlewood (Campo Verde HS) – 4th in Long Jump 5.25 meters (17-2.75) (5 points); 5thin Pole Vault 2.44 meters (8-0) (4 points); 7th in Javelin 29.07 meters (95-4) (2 points).

Akira Jones (St. David HS) – 5th in Hammer Throw 40.49 meters (132-10) (4 points)

Jessica Bright-Schade (Safford HS) – 5th in Javelin 36.08 meters (118-4) (4 points)

Ayanna Valenzuela (Marana HS) – 6th in Javelin 34.51 meters (113-2) (3 points)

Lucy Chavez (Bisbee HS) – 6th in Hammer Throw 40.31 meters (132-3) (3 points)

Abigail Walls (Tucson Magnet HS) – 7th in Long Jump 5.07 meters (16-7.75) (2 points)

Oksana Giron (Sunnyside HS) – 8th in 3,000 meter steeplechase 14:41.46 (1 point)

The final day of the NJCAA Region I Championship is on Thursday at Mesa Community College. Events begin at 5:00 p.m.
