(Tucson, AZ) Pima Community College softball player Alejandra Castro has made noise on and off the diamond this season.
Castro, a freshman first-baseman, was named the Chapman Automotive Aztecs Student-Athlete of the Week for the week for May 2-8.
Castro helped the Aztecs win their final four games to close out the regular season as she went 9 for 13 (.692) with four home runs, nine RBIs and eight runs scored.
She is majoring in Business and has maintained a 3.0-3.5 GPA range throughout her first year at Pima.
Castro has been active in community projects this season, dedicating time to Habitat for Humanity, Love of Reading and contributing to a clothing drive for elementary school kids.
She has also tutored her teammates in their Spanish classes and earlier this season hosted a water balloon fight after practice out on the field.
“She leads by example and loves the challenge of carrying the team on her shoulders when needed,” Pima softball coach Rebekah Quiroz said. “She’s got a killer bat and is as humble and respectful as they come. Alejandra continues to work hard, and this team and her community in Tucson are appreciative of all her work on and off the field.”
The Aztecs will be the No. 4 seed at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They will start the double elimination tournament against No. 1 seeded Yavapai College on Friday at 11:00 a.m. All games will be played at the Bill Vallely Field in Prescott.
