No. 7 Lopes go 2-2 in Battle for LA Invitational

(Los Angeles, CA)  The No. 7 Grand Canyon beach volleyball team fell 3-2 in its first game on Sunday to No. 2 UCLA in a tight dual that came down to the final court, then the Lopes bounced back and took down No. 11 Cal Poly 3-2 for the first time since 2016 at Mapes Beach.

No. 7 GCU vs. No. 2 UCLA

After the first wave of pairs, the Lopes and Bruins were tied 1-1, with GCU’s sophomore pair on Court No. 2 Allison Hansen and Allanis Navaspicking up the 21-18, 23-21 win. On Court No. 5, fifth year pair Dana Roskic and Cami Sanchez won the three set thriller 21-16, 13-21, 15-10 to pull the Lopes ahead 2-1. UCLA won against GCU’s No. 4 pair to tie the dual at 2-2. UCLA won the tie breaker on Court No. 3

No. 7 GCU vs. No. 11 Cal Poly

GCU defeated the Mustangs for the first time since 2016. The dual was tied 1-1 after the first round of pairs were complete. Hansen and Navas earned their second pair win of the day on Court No. 2 24-22, 21-17. On Court No. 5, Roskic and Sanchez finished the weekend 4-0 after taking down Cal Poly 26-24, 21-19. The dual was clinched by DeFalco and Morin in dominant fashion on Court No. 3 with scores of 21-13, 21-12.

The Lopes are back at GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium next weekend to take on Abilene Christian and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and Missouri State on Saturday.
