Aztecs baseball drops doubleheader at Arizona Western College

(Yuma, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (13-9, 2-6 in ACCAC) hit the road for an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Arizona Western College (15-3, 7-1) on Saturday in Yuma.
The Aztecs managed three runs off 10 hits for the day.

 

Game 1: Arizona Western College Matadors 2, Pima CC Aztecs 0

Sophomore Romeo Ballesteros (Salpointe Catholic HS) struck out to end the game with the bases loaded as the Aztecs left six runners stranded for the game.

Sophomore Fernando Loera finished 2 for 2 with a double while Ballesteros and freshmen Andrew Stucky (Canyon del Oro HS) and Gage Mestas each went 1 for 3.

Sophomore Jaren Jackson had a solid start as he pitched six innings giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts on 101 pitches.

Game 2: Arizona Western College Matadors 13, Pima CC Aztecs 3 (7 innings)

The Matadors scored two runs in each the 3rd and 4th innings but put up seven in the 5th.

The Aztecs cut into the deficit with three runs in the 6th inning. Freshman Braedon Mondeau (Cienega HS) drew a walk and later scored on an error. Ballesteros hit a single and scored when sophomore Preston Clifford (Sabino HS) hit an RBI single. Mestas reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored on a wild pitch.

The Matadors put up two runs in the 7th inning to end the game.
Clifford finished the game 3 for 4 with an RBI. Mondeau was 1 for 1 with two walks and a run and Ballesteros went 1 for 3 with a run.

Freshman Matt Cornelius took the loss as he pitched four innings giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Baseball Field on Tuesday when they host an ACCAC doubleheader against South Mountain Community College. First pitch is at noon.
