(Tempe, AZ) Sun Devil Football and the Pac-12 Conference have announced the 2022 football schedule and ASU’s six home games for the campaign, which features league games against Utah, Washington, UCLA, and Oregon State in addition to non-conference matchups with Northern Arizona and Eastern Michigan.
ASU will open the season at home in Sun Devil Stadium/Frank Kush Field against Northern Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 1. The Sun Devils will then go on the road for the first time the following weekend at Oklahoma State (9/10). It will be just the fourth all-time matchup against the Cowboys, with Arizona State holding a 2-1 advantage in the series.
The Sun Devils return home to take on Eastern Michigan on Sept. 17, squaring off with the Eagles for the first time ever and taking on just their fourth MAC opponent in program history.
ASU opens the Pac-12 slate with a key South Division matchup against Utah in Tempe on Sept. 24 before hitting the road for another Pac-12 South showdown on Oct. 1 against USC. ASU returns home for a tilt against Washington the following weekend (10/8) before heading into a bye weekend on Oct. 15.
Back-to-back road tilts fill out the back half of October with ASU heading to Stanford on Oct. 22 and Colorado on Oct. 29.
The month of November features alternating home and away contests with ASU taking on UCLA at Sun Devil Stadium on Nov. 5 before heading back on the road to square off with Washington State in Pullman on Nov. 12.
Sun Devil Senior Day and the final home game of the season will take place against Oregon State on Nov. 19 before ASU closes out the regular season with the annual Territorial Cup contest against Arizona on Friday, Nov. 25 in Tucson.

The 2022 Sun Devil Football schedule is on the league’s computer cycle of having four Pac-12 home games and five conference road games. Every Pac-12 team has two “misses” each year, meaning the teams they do not face. ASU’s misses in 2022 are Oregon and Cal.
A combination of the ESPN channels, ABC, FOX and FOX Sports 1 will broadcast 45 games nationally, including the Pac-12 Championship Game, and Pac-12 Networks will offer 35 games to a national audience. Exact broadcast schedules will be determined at a later date.
The Pac-12 Championship game will be played on Friday, Dec. 2 in Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.

Arizona State will get a preview of the home of the Pac-12 Championship later this month when they face the Wisconsin Badgers in the first SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl. The 30th edition of the Las Vegas Bowl will be played Thursday, Dec. 30, at 8:30 PM MST (10:30 PM ET/7:30 PM Local Time). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, featuring teams from the Big Ten and the Pac-12 Conference for the first time.
This matches the highest bowl placement (Pac-12 No. 3 team) for the Maroon & Gold since the 1996 Rose Bowl team (2007 & 2013 Holiday Bowl). Arizona State will serve as the home team in the contest.
ASU will play in its 33rd bowl game overall and make the team’s ninth bowl appearance in the last 10 seasons (not counting 2020 which was the COVID-19 season in which ASU declined a bowl invitation).
2021 SEASON IN REVIEW
The Sun Devils are coming off an 8-4 campaign that saw the program finish second in the Pac-12 South under head coach Herm Edwards. Arizona State enters the contest after capping the regular season by picking up their fifth-straight win in the Territorial Cup, crushing Arizona 38-15 at Sun Devil Stadium.
By guiding the Maroon & Gold to another impressive season, Herm Edwards accomplished many historical feats in his fourth year at the helm in Tempe. He became the first coach in program history to win each of his first four games against Arizona, outscoring the Wildcats 173-76 in those four games. In his tenure, ASU has beaten USC and UCLA in the same season twice (’18, ’21) – something that had happened just four times total prior to his arrival.
Arizona State is one of only 21 Power 5 teams to win at least six conference games and one of just 24 in the Power 5 to reach eight wins. The six wins in conference play represent only the seventh time the Sun Devils have accomplished that feat since joining the Pac-12 back in 1978. ASU has a chance to reach nine wins for the first time since 2014.
The success of the 2021 Sun Devils has been a result of balance in all three phases of the game. The offense, defense, and special teams have each come through at crucial moments throughout the season.
ASU’s defense has held opponents to 400 yards or less in 10 of 12 games this season. Under Herm Edwards, ASU has held opponents to the 400 or less mark for total offensive yards on 24 occasions over 42 games (57.1 percent of the time). For comparison, ASU accomplished the feat just 24 times in the 65 previous games (36.9 percent) from 2013-2017. In nine games this season, ASU held an opponent to less than 100 yards rushing AND/OR less than 100 yards passing (6 games under 100 yards rushing/3 games under 100 yards passing). The nine total sub-100 stat lines in one category or the other are the most since 1996 (also 9 – 5 games under 100 yards rushing, 4 under 100 yard passing).
The Sun Devils extended their streak to 14 games without allowing a 50-yard play, the longest active streak in the FBS. It has been 16 games since ASU has given up a 50-yard passing play. It is the only team in the FBS to not allow a 50-yard play this year. ASU has held opponents to less than 30 points in 29 of 42 games under Herm Edwards, notable as it DID allow 30+ in 32 of 43 previous games dating back to a span from 2013-17.
Not only has the defense shined, but a dominant running attack allowed the offense to emerge as one of the most potent in the conference. Arizona State has rushed for at least 100 yards as a team in 16 straight games. It is the longest streak of rushing for over 100 yards as a team since the last 10 games of 1995 and the first 11 of 1996 – a 21-game stretch over two seasons. The 47 rushing touchdowns by the Sun Devils over the last 15 games put them in the Top-5 nationally.
In their last bowl appearance under Edwards, ASU defeated Florida State in the 2019 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. The Sun Devil defense forced six turnovers in a 20-14 victory, the 15th bowl win in program history.
