Pierce Sterling falls short of triple-double as Aztecs men’s basketball opens season with a win

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (1-0) opened the 2021-22 season on Tuesday against Dream City Christian at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs took control in the second half to beat the Eagles 102-74.

Down 43-39 at halftime, the Aztecs opened the second half with a 12-0 run to make it 51-43. Pima continued to pour it on as they outscored the Eagles 30-9 in the first eight minutes to take a 69-52 advantage. The Aztecs outscored the Eagles 63-31 for the second half.

The Aztecs trailed by as much as 10 points and were down a majority of the first half.

Freshman Pierce Sterling fell a rebound short of a triple-double as he finished the game with 16 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds. He went 7 for 9 from the field.

Freshman Traivar Jackson scored 13 of his team-leading 20 points in the first half and also had seven rebounds. Sophomore Daniel Moody (Walden Grove HS) had a double-double for the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Freshman Jalen Johnson closed it out with 14 points on 5 for 9 shooting while sophomore Quincey Trammell posted 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Chrishon Dixon finished with 10 points and five assists.

The Aztecs are back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Thursday when they host Benedictine University at Mesa JV squad. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
