Aztecs women’s Cross Country Take Runner-Up at NJCAA Region I Championships

(Glendale, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s cross country team took second place at the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championships on Friday at the Glendale Heroes Regional Park.

The Aztecs finished with a team score of 40 points while Central Arizona College claimed first place with 15 points.

Freshman Marissa Lopez (Sahuarita HS) was the top finisher for the Aztecs in the 5K (3.1 mile) race as she took sixth place with a time of 22 minutes, 44.2 seconds.

Freshman Oksana Giron (Sunnyside HS) finished the race in seventh place with a time of 22:45.3 while freshman Candice Pocase (Santa Rita HS) crossed the finish line in eighth place at 22:54.9.

Freshman Emalyn Brown (Canyon del Oro HS) claimed ninth place and crossed the finish line at 23:35.3 and freshman Mykayla Tarwater (Tucson Magnet HS) was 10th at 23:49.0.

All of  Pima women’s cross country runners earned All-Region honors.

Coach’s Quote: “Our women’s team has come a long way. They are consistently improving and showing they belong at the national level,” Pima cross country co-head coach Mark Bennett said. “They are tough and some of the hardest workers I know.”

The Aztecs will compete at the NJCAA Division I National Championships on Saturday, November 13 at Pole Green Park in Richmond, VA.
