Muñoz and Samorano homer as Aztecs softball splits with Glendale CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (9-19, 9-19 in ACCAC) snapped an eight-game skid as it closed out its regular season home schedule on Thursday against Glendale Community College (11-22, 11-21).

Sophomore Giselle Muñoz finished the day going 6 for 7 with four RBIs, three runs scored, a home run and two doubles. Freshman Isabella Escobar finished the day with four walks, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Glendale CC Gauchos 1

Freshman Anisah Triste pitched a gem as she threw a complete-game giving up one run (one earned) on five hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks. She improved to 5-10 on the season.

The Aztecs took an early lead in the 1st inning with four runs. Escobar and freshman Lesly Cazares (Desert View HS) drew walks to start the inning. Escobar advanced to third and scored on Triste’s sacrifice-fly RBI to put the Aztecs on the board. Freshman Lorisa Martinez drew a walk to put two runners on and Muñoz cleared the bases with a 3-run blast with two outs to make it 4-0.

The Aztecs tacked on another two runs in the 2nd inning. Freshman Mariah Bartlett hit a leadoff double and stole home plate to make it 5-0. Triste hit an RBI single with two outs to plate Escobar, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.

The Aztecs added another insurance run in the 5th inning when Escobar drew a bases loaded walk. She finished with three walks, two runs scored and an RBI for the game.

Muñoz was a flawless 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Triste finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Bartlett went 1 for 3 with a run.

Game 2: Glendale CC Gauchos 6, Pima CC Aztecs 4

The Aztecs took the lead in the 4thinning but the Gauchos responded with five runs in the 5th to take the lead for good.

Down 1-0, the Aztecs tied the game when freshman Kelli Samorano (Tucson Magnet HS) hit a leadoff homer to left field. Muñoz and freshman Kayla Gonzales (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit back-to-back singles. With two outs, Escobar was clutch as she hit a 2-run RBI single to make it 3-1.

The Aztecs attempted to rally in the 7th trailing 6-3. Muñoz hit an RBI double with two outs to score Samorano. The Aztecs stranded two runners on base as Bartlett grounded out to end the game.

Samorano finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Muñoz was 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run and two doubles, Gonzales finished 3 for 4 with a run and Escobar went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a walk.

Martinez took the loss (2-4) as she pitched seven innings giving up six runs (six earned) on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and six walks.

The Aztecs close out the regular season on Saturday when they play at Arizona Western College. First pitch is at noon.
