Martinez and Escobar each blast 2 homers as Aztecs softball splits at Chandler-Gilbert CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (7-9, 7-9 in ACCAC) snapped its six-game skid on Thursday as it split at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (9-15, 9-15).

Freshmen Lorisa Martinez and Isabella Escobar led the offensive attack. Martinez finished the day 5 for 6 with two home runs, seven RBIs and four runs scored. Escobar went 5 for 6 with two homers (which included a grand slam), six RBIs and three runs scored.

Freshman Anisah Triste scored five runs and finished with both decisions on the mound.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 17, Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 6 (5 innings)

The Aztecs’ offense went on a tear as it scored in every inning to earn the run-rule victory.

The Aztecs sealed it with six runs in the 5th inning. They scored all their runs with no outs in the inning. Triste hit an RBI single to score freshman Kayla Gonzales (Salpointe Catholic HS). Martinez loaded the bases with a walk and Escobar cleared them with a grand slam to make it 16-6. Freshman Mariah Bartlett capped off the inning with an RBI single

Martinez put the Aztecs on the board with a 2-run home run in the 1st inning and later had an RBI single in the 4th inning. Freshman Dominique Triste also added a 2-run RBI double in the 4th inning.

Bartlett hit a 2-run homer in the 3rd inning to make it 7-3.
Escobar finished the game 2 for 3 with five RBIs and two runs scored.

Gonzales went 4 for 5 with an RBI and two runs while Martinez was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, three runs scored and two walks. Anisah Triste went 3 for 5 with an RBI and three runs and Dominique Triste finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Bartlett was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run.

Anisah Triste picked up the win (4-4) as she pitched a complete-game giving up six runs (six earned) on eight hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Chandler-Gilbert CC Coyotes 10, Pima CC Aztecs 8

The Aztecs took an 8-2 lead but the Coyotes scored eight unanswered runs in the late innings.

Anisah Triste, Martinez and freshman Jazmin Ayala (Sunnyside HS) had three straight RBI hits in the 3rd inning to give Pima a 3-2 lead. Gonzales, sophomore Giselle Muñoz (Salpointe Catholic HS) and Anisah Triste scored the runs in the inning.

In the 4th inning, Anisah Triste hit an RBI single to drive in sophomore Muñoz. Martinez followed it up with a three-run home run scoring freshman Lesly Cazares (Desert View HS) and Anisah Triste to make it 7-2. Not to be outdone, Escobar followed it up with a solo shot to cap off the inning.

The Coyotes scored three runs in the 5th inning and five runs in the 6th inning to take the lead.

Martinez finished the game 3 for 4 with four RBIs and a run while Escobar went 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Anisah Triste was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs and Muñoz finished 3 for 5 with two runs. Ayala went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Anisah Triste pitched in relief and took the loss (4-5) as she went one inning giving up two runs (two earned) on three hits with one walk.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Softball Field part of the Chapman Auto Sports Complex on Saturday when they host Arizona Western College in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at noon.
