PCC Outdoor Sports to resume; Indoor Sports decisions week-to-week

(TUCSON, AZ)  Pima Community College will resume play in all outdoor sports for the Spring 2021 season. The College cited continued declines in COVID-19 cases.

Men’s baseball will resume with a doubleheader against College of Southern Nevada on Feb. 12 at Pima West Campus. The College currently is not allowing spectators.

Women’s softball, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf, resume practice this week.

Decisions on indoor sports, however, basketball and volleyball, are still being made on a weekly basis, although the College hopes to resume those sports as soon as possible. The next scheduled basketball games are Saturday in Aztec Gym against Central Arizona.

PCC Athletics Director Jim Monaco said the College was pleased to resume outdoor sports amid improving COVID-19 numbers in the region.

“We acknowledge the frustration and disappointment of our student athletes as we navigate the pandemic,” Monaco said. “Decisions to cancel or postpone games have both practical and emotional tolls.

“However, Pima Community College sets a high standard for health and safety and we don’t compromise on that commitment.”

PCC follows multiple metrics to make its decisions, including guidelines established by the Pima County Health Department for numbers of positive cases, hospital capacity, tracking and prevention, and other factors.

The College has been following strict protocols for the safety of athletes since practices began. All athletes and coaches underwent testing for COVID-19 and adhere to rules regarding the use of face coverings and social distancing.
