(Phoenix, AZ) Grand Canyon women’s basketball head coach Nicole Powell is departing the program, GCU announced on Monday. Powell served as Lopes’ head coach for three seasons and compiled a record of 38-46 (.452).
Powell has accepted a position as the women’s basketball head coach at UC Riverside. An immediate national search is underway for GCU’s next women’s basketball head coach.
“GCU thanks Coach Powell for her three years of service to the university, and we wish her the best of luck in her new position,” Interim Vice President of Athletics Jamie Boggs said. “We will move quickly to identify a new head women’s basketball coach. The university’s support of our women’s basketball program makes this a very attractive position in the national landscape.”
Powell led the Lopes to a rebound year in 2019-20, as GCU had an eight-win improvement and posted a runner-up finish in the WAC. Powell’s squad was awarded with several honors, including WAC Freshman and Newcomer of the Year Jada Holland.
