Turner-Vizcarra’s walk-off and Caldera’s 5 RBIs power Aztecs softball over South Mountain CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (26-25, 22-22 in ACCAC) earned an ACCAC doubleheader sweep against South Mountain Community College (22-28, 16-28) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Softball Field.

Freshman Amaya Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) hit a walk-off in extra innings while sophomore Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) went yard and finished with five RBIs in the second game.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 5, South Mountain CC Cougars 4 (8 innings)

Turner-Vizcarra (Tucson HS) hit a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the 8th inning to score Caldera (Tucson HS) from second base to give the Aztecs the win in the first game.

Caldera hit a fielder’s choice and sophomore Alese Casper scored to tie the game at 4-4.

Down 3-1, the Aztecs forced extra innings with two runs in the 7th inning. Freshman Kylee Leach reached on an error; which scored freshman Giselle Munoz (Salpointe Catholic HS). Sophomore Ariana Gomez (Sahuaro HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to left field which brought in Turner-Vizcarra to tie it at 3-3.

The Cougars scored a run to retake the lead at 4-3 in the top of the 8th.
Turner-Vizcarra finished 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk. Gomez also went 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.

Sophomore Alizea Durazo-Corday was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Freshman Abril Nerey (Rio Rico HS) picked up the win (7-9) in a relief appearance as she pitched the final five innings giving up two runs (two earned) on six hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 8, South Mountain CC Cougars 4

The Aztecs rallied off six runs in the 2nd inning as freshman pitcher Bianca Castillo (Rio Rico HS) held the Cougars scoreless for the final five and two-third innings.

Down 4-2 in the bottom of the 2nd, the Aztecs loaded the bases with no outs. Gomez hit an RBI single to score sophomore Jessica Lozania (Sahuarita HS). Casper hit into a fielder’s choice to plate sophomore Janice Garcia (Rio Rico HS) to tie the game at 4-4. Sophomore Devynn Marshall (Shadow Ridge HS) followed with an RBI single to score freshman Samantha Angulo (Mountain View HS) to give the Aztecs a 5-4 lead. Caldera stepped up and hit a three-run blast to center field to cap off the inning.

Caldera tied the game at 2-2 in the 1st inning with a two-run RBI single to score Casper and Marshall. She finished 2 for 3 with five RBIs and a run scored.

The first four batters in the lineup: Gomez, Casper, Marshall and Caldera, combined to go 8 for 15 with eight RBIs and five runs scored. Marshall was 3 for 4 with an RBI while Gomez finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Casper went 1 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Castillo picked up her 10th win of the season (10-11) after she shut out the Cougars for five and two-third innings giving up four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

The Aztecs will head to Prescott on Tuesday for an ACCAC Division I doubleheader at Yavapai College. First game starts at 1:00 p.m.
