Aztecs men’s golf struggles but holds first place after third round of Region I, Division I Championship

(Gold Canyon, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s golf team closed out the third round of play at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort on Saturday.

The Aztecs struggled in the third round collectively but maintained first place in the team standings of the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championship. They sit with 894 (294-296-304) and lead Eastern Arizona College by 6-strokes as they have a three-day score of 900 (308-298-294). Estrella Mountain Community College is in third place with 969.

Freshman Samuel Salisbury (Walden Grove HS) shot a 3-over par 73 in Saturday’s round and is in third place with 219 (71-75-73). He is 6-strokes back from the leader in the individual standings.

Sophomore Diego Cueva-Schraidt (Sabino HS) is in fourth place with 227 (75-73-79) while freshmen Cody Goza (Blue Ridge HS) and Luis Riesgo (Cienega HS) are tied for fifth place each with 228. Goza shot a 79 on the day (75-74-79) and Riesgo finished with an 81 (73-74-81).

Freshman Curtis Goldin (McClintock HS) had his best round of the tournament with a 73 as he is in seventh place with a 229 (80-76-73).

The Aztecs will close out the NJCAA Region I, Division I Championship on Sunday. Teams begin to tee off at 8:30 a.m. at the Gold Canyon Golf Resort.
