Bryan suffers first loss but Aztecs respond to split at Paradise Valley CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (22-10, 10-7 in ACCAC) played an ACCAC doubleheader on the road on Saturday at Paradise Valley Community College (21-11, 7-10).

Game 1: Paradise Valley CC Pumas 8, Pima CC Aztecs 0: The Pumas put up a five spot in the 5th inning as the Aztecs managed three hits in the game.

Sophomore Austin Bryan (Sahuarita HS) suffered his first loss of the season (6-1) as he pitched four and one-third innings giving up six runs (four earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and six walks.

The offense struggled to get anything going as they left six runners on base. Freshman Cole Cummings was 1 for 3 while sophomores Phillip Sikes and Rafael Padilla (Nogales HS) each drew two walks.

Game 2: Pima CC Aztecs 7, Paradise Valley CC Pumas 5 (10 innings): The Pumas forced extra innings after scoring three runs in the 9th inning but the Aztecs countered with two runs in the top of the 10th to help put the game away.

Freshman JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) hit an RBI triple in the extra frame scoring freshman Angel Ochoa (Canyon del Oro HS), who drew a walk earlier in the inning. Rollon later scored on a wild pitch.

The Aztecs broke a 2-2 tie in the 8th inning with two outs when Padilla reached on an error which scored Ochoa. Later with the bases loaded, freshman Karl Koerper hit a two-run RBI single to plate Rollon and Padilla to make it 5-2.

Rollon went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Koerper was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a walk. Ochoa drew two walks and scored two runs. Cummings finished 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the 5th inning, a run scored and a walk.

Sophomore Adam Moraga pitched in relief and got the win (5-2) as he threw the final one and two-third innings giving up one hit with four strikeouts. Sophomore Hayden Udall started the game and went eight and one-third innings giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs will take to the road on Tuesday when they play an ACCAC doubleheader at Glendale Community College. First pitch is at noon.
