Aztecs baseball struggles to rally, gets swept against College of Southern Nevada

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (7-3) had a difficult time manufacturing runs on Friday in its doubleheader against the College of Southern Nevada.

The Aztecs were swept by the Coyotes as Pima scored three runs on the day.

Game 1: College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 5, Pima CC Aztecs 1: The Aztecs managed four hits for the game and the rally was cut short in the 6th inning.

The Aztecs got on the board when freshman Cole Cummings scored on an outfielder’s error after sophomore Phillip Sikes hit a single. Sikes and sophomore Rafael Padilla (Nogales HS) were left stranded on base to end the inning.

Cummings and Sikes each finished 1 for 3. Sophomore Jacob Jacome went 1 for 2 and freshman JJ Rollon (Skyline HS) was 1 for 1.
Sophomore Hayden Udall (Campo Verde HS) took the loss (2-1) as he pitched five innings giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 6, Pima CC Aztecs 2: The Aztecs cut the Southern Nevada lead in half after the 5th inning but the Coyotes scored four unanswered runs.

Down 2-0, sophomore Fabian Ferreira (Tucson HS) hit an RBI single to score freshman Karl Koerper. The Coyotes responded with two runs in the bottom half of the 5th.

The Aztecs got the first two runners on base to open the 9th inning. Koerper hit an RBI single to score sophomore Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS). The next three batters struck outto end the game.

Koerper finished 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Ferreira was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Sikes went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Sophomore pitcher Conner Nantkes took the loss (1-2) after he pitched four and two-third innings giving up four runs (four earned) on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

The Aztecs will close out play in the CSN Coyotes Classic on Saturday when they play a doubleheader against the College of Southern Idaho. The first game starts at 11:00 a.m.
