Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College softball team (35-19, 26-18 in ACCAC) were overwhelmed and dropped a heart breaker on
Tuesday at No. 6 ranked Phoenix College (39-8, 35-7).
Maria Vanezza Caldera (Tucson HS) had a great day at the plate as she went 4 for 5 with five RBIs and a run scored.
Game 1: (6) Phoenix College Bears 13, Pima CC Aztecs 4 (5 innings): The Bears scored five runs in the 1st inning and ended the game with another five runs in the 5th.
The Aztecs got on the board in the 3rd inning when freshman Alese Casper hit a leadoff solo home run. Caldera hit an RBI double to score freshman Mya Cabral (Pueblo HS) to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Bears responded with three runs in the 4th.
Caldera had another RBI hit in the 5th inning as she finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a walk. Casper went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Cabral was 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Chandler Arviso (Cibola HS) had an RBI in the 5th inning and finished 1 for 3.
Casper took the loss (13-9) as she went four and two-third innings giving up 13 runs (13 earned) on 15 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Game 2: (6) Phoenix College Bears 8, Pima CC Aztecs 7: The Aztecs gave up five runs in the 7th inning as the Bears stole the second game.
The Aztecs took the lead in the first inning and maintained it with three runs in the 3rd and one run in each the 4th and 5th innings to take a 7-3 advantage.
Caldera finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored while sophomore Sierra Gentry went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Cabral was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Megan Flores (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored two runs scored while fellow sophomore Edith Prieto (Sunnyside HS) drew two walks and scored a run.
Gentry took the loss (5-5) as she threw six innings giving up eight runs (seven runs) on 10 hits with one strikeout and six walks.

The Aztecs are off until next Tuesday, Apr. 24 when they host their final regular season home doubleheader against Paradise Valley Community College. First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m.
