Aztecs baseball woes continue in doubleheader loss to Glendale CC

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College baseball team (20-30, 10-28 in ACCAC) struggled to manufacture runs on Tuesday in its ACCAC doubleheader against Glendale Community College (29-25, 21-17).

The Aztecs scored two runs on the day and had just five hits.

Game 1: Glendale CC Gauchos 7, Pima CC Aztecs (7 innings): The Gauchos scored three runs in each the 3rd and 5th innings.

The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the 3rd inning when freshman Matthew Hackman (Empire HS) hit a solo home run to cut Glendale’s lead to 4-1. Hackman went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Freshman Javier Nava hit a leadoff single in the 1st inning. The Aztecs finished the game with two hits.

Freshman Michael Wong took the loss on the mound (2-6) as he pitched three innings giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: Glendale CC Gauchos 6, Pima CC Aztecs 1: The Gauchos broke open a tie game with two runs in the 8th and three runs in the 9th.

The Aztecs were blanked for seven innings but got on the board in the 7th when freshman Rafael Padilla scored on freshman Juan Durazo’s (Salpointe Catholic HS) sacrifice bunt to tie the game at 1-1. Padilla drew a walk earlier in the inning.

The Aztecs had three hits for the game. Wong finished 2 for 3 while freshman Elisandro Diaz (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 1 for 4.

Freshman Thomas Garcia (Salpointe Catholic HS) took the loss (1-2) as he threw one inning in relief giving up four runs (four earned) on two hits with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Jose Contreras (Tucson HS) started the game and pitched seven solid innings giving up one run (none earned) on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk on 99 pitches.
