Hackman hits walk-off homer as Aztecs baseball splits with Scottsdale CC

Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College baseball team (15-15, 7-13 in ACCAC) got back into action on Tuesday at the West Campus Baseball Field as it hosted Scottsdale Community College (13-19, 7-11).

Sophomore Marcus Mendez (Desert View HS) went 5 for 8 with two RBIs and two runs scored on the day. Freshman Enrique Porchas (Kofa HS) was also 5 for 8 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Game 1: Pima CC Aztecs 10, Scottsdale CC Artichokes 8 (8 innings): Freshman Matthew Hackman (Empire HS) came through in the clutch as he hit a walk-off two-run home run in the 8th inning to win it for the Aztecs. Freshman Elisandro Diaz (Salpointe Catholic HS) hit a leadoff single and sophomore Martin Garcia (Tucson HS) sacrificed him over to set up Hackman’s game-winner.

The Aztecs rallied to tie the game in the 5th inning. Down 8-5, Porchas hit a two-run RBI double to score freshman Sergio Gonzalez (Nogales HS) and Mendez. Sophomore Logan Klunder tied the game at 8-8 with a groundout RBI to score Porchas.

Porchas finished the game 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Klunder also finished 3 for 5 and had two RBIs and a run scored. Hackman was 1 for 2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and three walks. Mendez went 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Sophomore Jose Contreras (Tucson HS) picked up the win (4-3) as he pitched the 8th inning with two strikeouts.

Game 2: Scottsdale CC Artichokes 9, Pima CC Aztecs 6: The Aztecs couldn’t get over the hump in the second game.

The Artichokes took a 7-0 lead after the 3rd inning but the Aztecs cut into their lead with two runs in the 3rd and three runs in the 4th inning but could not get any closer than three runs.

Mendez hit a two-run RBI single in the 4th and finished the game 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Porchas went 2 for 3 with a run scored while Hackman was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Baseball Field on Saturday when they host South Mountain Community College in an ACCAC doubleheader. The first game begins at noon.
