Utah Takes Down Arizona 89-55 in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY – The Arizona women’s basketball team (4-8) dropped their first Pac-12 contest of the season tonight at the Huntsman Center against Utah (10-2) by a score of 89-55.

JaLea Bennett once again scored well for Arizona as she dropped 18 points to lead the Wildcats. The senior has now scored in double-figures in 10-straight games, which is a career-high. Marlee Kyles also pitched in 10 points off the bench for her seventh double-figure game of her young career.

Utah controlled the game from the tip as they never trailed and the game was tied for just 32 seconds. The Utes shot 49% from the field while holding Arizona to 32%, outrebounded Arizona 54-27 and won the points in the paint battle 50-20.

 

Utah got off to a very quick start in the first quarter with an 18-3 run in the first seven minutes of the ballgame. Bennett would score seven points for Arizona in the first period, but Utah would finish the quarter up 27-14. The second quarter was much of the same as Utah maintained a comfortable lead in the second quarter, taking a 49-31 lead into halftime. Bennett did lead all scorers with 14 points at the break.

The Utes would extend their lead to 30 heading into the fourth quarter thanks to 11 points in the third quarter alone by Daneesha Provo, who finished the game with a game-high 24 points off the bench. Utah maintained their lead in the fourth quarter and coasted to an 89-55 victory.

The Cats will head to Boulder, Colo. now for a New Year’s Eve matchup vs. Colorado at 1 p.m. MST in the Coors Events Center.
