(Tucson, AZ) In the first game against the Miners Arizona laid the lumber scoring seventeen runs in a routing winning by sixteen runs. The Cats started Marissa Schuld locked it down for the Zona giving up only one run in four innings of work in the seventeen to one victory.
Arizona started Vanessa Foreman in the circle for game two against UTEP. She yielded an early run to the Miners in the first inning.
Foreman found her groove going four solid innings and only allowing the one run and striking out two batters.
Arizona scored runs in the second inning to answer the Miners one to zero lead. The Cats scored with small ball and a RBI hit from Hillary Editor scoring Malia Martinez to tie. Later in the inning, Edior scored on a wild pitch to put the Cats up 2-1.
As in the first game, this was an opportunity for players that don’t usually see the field a chance to work on their talents in an in-game situation. The perfect example of that is Izzy Pancho catching and developing her skills. This helps the Cats with depth and their development of young players.
The Wildcats brought in Hanah Bowen in the fifth inning in mope up duty for Foreman. Bowen pitched three strong innings not allowing a run and striking out six batters along the way.
The two combined for eight strikeouts on seventy-eight total pitches and walked only one batter. In the doubleheader Arizona’s pitching staff gave up two runs on ten hits and punched out ten batters.
The offense added to the lead in the fifth inning scoring three runs and gave Arizona the 5-1 lead down the stretch.
Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza homered in the inning giving her thirteen for the season. Later in the inning Jesse Harper went yard for a two-run blast scoring Reyna Carranco on the play. This was Harper’s nineteenth homerun which both leads the team and the conference as well.
With the sweep of the UTEP Miners Arizona now sits at 29-7 on the season and (9-0) in PAC-12 with an eleven-game winning streak.
The week isn’t over for the Cats as they will take on the Utah Utes who have a record of 13-21, but playing in elevation has its challenges. The first game against Utah will be Friday at 6 p.m. on PAC-12 networks.
