Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College volleyball team (6-11, 3-4 in ACCAC) protected home court in its biggest win of the season on Friday at the West Campus Gymnasium.
The Aztecs shocked No. 11 Glendale Community College in four sets 25-21, 15-25, 25-21, 25-23).
The Aztecs held a sizable lead through much of the first set and sophomore Victoria Davis (Sahuaro HS) and freshman Kaitlin Schmich (Mountain View HS) each had six kills to help Pima take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Gauchos (12-5, 5-4) scored eight straight points in the second set to take control and tie it up at 1-1. The Aztecs came back and held a slim lead for much of the third set but the Gauchos tied it at 21-21. The Aztec scored the final four points with two kills from Schmich and an ace from freshman Caley Bringmann helped seal it.
The fourth set was another tight one. The Gauchos took a 10-6 advantage but the Aztecs scored seven straight points to take a 13-10 lead of their own. The Gauchos came back and went up 21-16 but Pima went on another run of five straight points to tie it 21-21. With the score tied at 22-22, the Gauchos had a few miscues to give the Aztecs the win.
Davis finished the match with 21 kills, 19 digs, four blocks and two aces. Sophomore Kayli Riesgo (Cienega HS) had 42 assists and 19 digs while Schmich finished with 12 kills, 15 digs and two aces. Sophomore Anissa Conrad produced 18 digs and one ace.
The Aztecs were 0-2 on the season against Glendale coming into Friday’s match.
The Aztecs will be back on the road as they play at Phoenix College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Aztecs beat the Bears in four sets on Sept. 1 at the West Campus.
