(PULLMAN, WA) It took 90 points for the Washington State Cougars (8-16, 3-10 Pac-12) to beat the Arizona Wildcats (15-8, 5-7 Pac-12) on Saturday afternoon as the final score ended at 90-88 in Pullman. Borislava Hristova led all scorers with 37 points.
For Arizona, four Wildcats scored in double-figures and were led by Aari McDonald, who had 26 on the day to go with six rebounds and six assists.
Cate Reese had a Pac-12 best 19 points and brought down five rebounds. Sam Thomas scored 16 and Lucia Alonso had 14, with 12 coming in the fourth quarter off four three-pointers.
Arizona shot 54% from the field and 60% from three, but they were one upped by the Cougars as they knocked down 57% of their shots. Chanelle Molina also pitched in 28 points for Washington State.
The first quarter was tightly contested as Washington State took an 18-15 lead into the second quarter. Both teams would really shoot the ball well in the second period, as the Cougars shot 63% and the Wildcats shot 53%.
WSU would take a 42-38 lead into the second half as Molina scored 19 first-half points. Reese, Thomas and McDonald all were in double-figures after the first half.
The two teams kept up their hot shooting in the third quarter as they each shot 64% from the field and WSU would take a 65-58 lead into the fourth quarter.
Washington State and Arizona turned the offense up even more in the fourth quarter as there were 55 combined points in the final period. The Cougars upped their lead to nine with just under five minutes remaining, but the Wildcats got the lead all the way down to one after Dominique McBryde converted an and-one with four seconds left.
The Cougars made one free throw to give Arizona a chance at the end, but a McDonald three-point attempt came up short.
Arizona will head back to Tucson to take on Utah on Friday, Feb. 15,
