(Scottsdale, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (6-5, 2-1 in ACCAC) picked up a big ACCAC conference road victory on Friday at Scottsdale Community College (6-5, 2-2).
The Aztecs defeated the No. 21 ranked Artichokes in five sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 17-25, 16-14).
The Aztecs fell behind in the tiebreaker 10-7 but rallied off five straight points as freshman Leah Stoneking (Catalina Foothills HS) had three aces in that stretch as they took a 12-10 lead forcing Scottsdale to call timeout. The Artichokes scored three straight to retake the lead at 13-12 and again at 14-13 as Pima called timeout facing match point. The Artichokes’ attempts to close out the match went out of play, giving the Aztecs match point at 15-14. Freshman Amaris Biancuzzo (Mica Mountain HS) made a block at net that stayed inbounds to seal the win.
Up 14-11 in the first set, the Aztecs scored five straight points after getting two aces from Biancuzzo and a block from sophomore Breeze Schelter to make it 19-11. The Aztecs led by as much as nine points to take the first set.
The Aztecs fell behind 11-2 in the second set, but chipped away and cut it to 14-11. The Artichokes built their lead back to six points at 20-14. The Aztecs scored seven straight points as Biancuzzo continued her serving dominance with another two aces as well as getting kills from freshman Estelle Fetsis (Pusch Ridge Christian), sophomore Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) and Schelter to help close the gap. A block by freshman Skylar Westburg tied the game at 20-20 and Gilvin’s kill put the Aztecs ahead for the first time in the set at 21-20. The teams went back and forth for the next few points as there were three ties but Scottsdale got the final two points to tie the match at 1-1.
The beginning of the third set featured eight ties. Down 13-12, the Aztecs scored eight of the next nine points to take 21-14 lead and grab hold of a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Aztecs trailed the entire fourth set but were able to cut the deficit to 18-16 after Biancuzzo’s kill forced Scottsdale to call timeout. The Artichokes scored seven of the final eight points to force the tiebreaker.
Freshman Victoria Page closed out the match with 12 kills, two aces and three blocks while Westburg also finished in double figures with 10 kills. Stoneking posted 23 digs and four aces while Fetsis had 15 digs. Schelter finished with 32 assists and four blocks.
The Aztecs return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Wednesday when they host Phoenix College in an ACCAC conference match. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m
