(Queen Creek, AZ) The Park University Gilbert golf team wrapped up the Park-Gilbert Shootout, Friday afternoon at the Las Colinas Golf Club.
After three days of tournament competition, the Buccaneers opened the fall season with a win in the books. They defeated the Benedictine University Mesa Redhawks and Hope International University Royals, shooting a collective one-under-par as a team this week. Benedictine Mesa finished as the runner up shooting 25-over-par while Hope International finished 75-over-par.
Entering the final round of play on Friday, the Bucs held a two-stroke lead over BENU as a team. After the first two days at Whirlwind GC the Bucs leaned on their home course advantage at Las Colinas GC to score a team total of 270 Friday afternoon, their best round of the week.
Senior Riley Wortman took home first-place honors at the Park-Gilbert Shootout, after shooting an impressive 63 in Friday round of 18. This was Wortman’s second career win since joining Park in 2023.
Wortman trailed BENU’s Nathan Giles after the first two days of action, sitting at even par heading into round three. Riley birdied five holes on the front nine and four holes on the back nine at the par 71 Las Colinas course.
Freshman Xavier Salazar also recorded a tournament-high 63 Friday afternoon following the 80 and 73 scores he posted at Whirlwind Golf Club on Wednesday and Thursday. Salazar logged an eagle on the 541-yard par 5 12th hole, while also adding seven birdies and nine pars. Xavier’s 63 was enough to place him and Wortman in a tie for first-place in round three.
Wortman and Salazar tied the Park-Gilbert program record for lowest score in a single round with 63.
Jax Sisson shot a 69 Friday afternoon with three birdies on the front nine and three birdies on the back nine. Sisson finished as the individual runner-up to Wortman in the Park-Gilbert Shootout at two-under par.
The Buccaneers return to the course in two weeks, when they hit the road for the OUAZ Sundance Shootout on Sept. 23 and 24. Both rounds of 18 will be played at Sundance Golf Club in Surprise, Arizona.
