(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (5-5, 1-1 in ACCAC) was back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Friday for an ACCAC conference showdown with Mesa Community College (8-6, 2-0).

The Aztecs fell to the No. 18 ranked Thunderbirds in straight sets 25-22, 25-19, 25-21 snapping their three-match win streak.

The Thunderbirds scored six straight points to take an 11-5 advantage in the first set. The Aztecs closed the gap after back-to-back kills from freshman Skylar Westburg and sophomore Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) to cut the deficit to 16-14. Pima trailed 22-16 but scored four straight points to once again cut Mesa’s lead to two points at 22-20. The Aztecs would score two straight on Mesa set-point, but the Thunderbirds scored to take a 1-0 lead.

The Aztecs took an early lead in the second set when freshman Amaris Biancuzzo (Mica Mountain HS) scored two straight points on a block and an ace. Freshman Victoria Page’s kill made it 6-3 but the Thunderbirds scored four straight to take the lead back. Pima trailed by as many as seven points in the set. They rallied off two straight after an attack went out of play and freshman Estelle Fetsis (Pusch Ridge Christian) put down an ace, but Mesa scored the next ensuing point to go up 2-0 in the match.

Sophomore Alexia Hutchens’ (Salpointe Catholic HS) kill put the Aztecs up 4-1 in the opening points of the third set but the Thunderbirds countered with six straight point to halt any momentum. Mesa led the remainder of the set. Trailing 23-18, the Aztecs scored three straight points with Gilvin and Page providing back-to-back kills and an out-of-play call made it 23-21. Mesa scored the final two points to win the match.

Hutchens finished the match with eight kills while Fetsis had 12 digs. Biancuzzo posted five kills, three blocks and two aces. Sophomore Alexandra Jacome (Canyon del Oro HS) added 13 assists and four digs.

The Aztecs will hit the road next Friday, Sept. 18 for an ACCAC conference match at Scottsdale Community College. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
