(Lompoc, CA) The Park University Gilbert golf team had a solid day 3 of the Great Southwest Athletic Conference Golf Championships at the La Purisima Golf Course. The Buccaneers moved up one spot in the standings to seventh-place. Junior Riley Wortman shot the second-best round of the day with a two-under 74 to move up seven spots in the individual standings to finish in eighth place. In addition, the GSAC All-Conference team was announced and Junior Cole Taylor was named to the squad.
As a team, the Buccaneers shot the third-best team score of the day, but their day two performance put them out of the running for the championship won by No. 6 OUAZ. The average score today was slightly higher than yesterday and the Bucs were eight strokes better in tougher conditions. A testament to them continuing to compete even after a sub-par round.
Individually, Wortman shot a 74 (+2); only two players shot a better score than him today and no player broke par in any of the rounds of the tournament on the par 72, 6,799-yard course.
Overall, Wortman finishes at +12 which put him in eighth-place. This was Wortman’s third top-10 finish this spring including one top-5.
Fellow junior Cole Taylor was named to the GSAC All-Conference team for the first time. Today, he shot a six-over 78 as he finished in 24th-place. Taylor also had two top-10 finishes in the spring and a top-5 appearance as well.
Freshman Gabriel Garcia had a breakout tournament, finishing in 17th-place after a final round 79 (+7). This was Garcia’s best tournament performance of the season.
