(Lompoc, CA)  The Park University Gilbert golf team sits in fourth place after day one of the Great Southwest Athletic Conference Golf Championships at the La Purisima Golf Course. Freshman Gabriel Garcia is in seventh-place after a first round 75.

The Buccaneers were at or near the top of the team leaderboard most of the day as the majority of teams started their round on hole 10. After nine holes the Bucs were just 11-over on the round and sitting in second place overall.

The front side of the 6,700-yard course took its revenge on all teams for the second half of the day. First day team leader OUAZ was -3 at one point before the front side took the sixth-ranked team in the country and finished them at +9 (297). The Spirit were the only squad to shoot a team score under 300 today. The Bucs went from +11 to +24 (312) on the front side.

The course was not friendly to any of the golfers and there were no linksters under par for the round and only one player Hudson Hobbs of Arizona Christian who is at even par.

Individually, the top three golfers included Garcia who led the way for Park after shooting a first round 75 (+3). It was a steady round, featuring one birdie and four bogeys. Junior Riley Wortman was next with a 78 (+6) which places him in 17th place. Wortman had 14 pars in his round. Junior Cole Taylor had three birdies as he shot 79 (+7) which places him 21st.

The average score for the round for the entire field was 81.30 all five Bucs were at or under that number.

Round two will commence between 9:30-10:06 a.m. tomorrow for the Buccaneers as all five players will tee off from hole 10.
