Julissa Lopez has five hits and four RBIs, Isabel Mendoza scores four runs as Softball wins 10th straight

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (34-5, 26-4 in ACCAC) have put together its second double-digit win streak of the season as it hosted Mesa Community College (12-26, 9-23) on Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The No. 10 ranked Aztecs have won 10 straight games after they swept the Thunderbirds.
Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) closed out the day going 5-for-8 with four RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega HS) finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two walks while freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire HS) was 3-for-7 with two RBIs and two runs. Freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) went 2-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs.

Sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) closed it out going 3-for-6 with three RBIs. Freshmen Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS) and Tayah Lyons made their impacts in individual games. Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) and freshman Brooklyn Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) picked up the wins in the circle.

Game 1: (10) Pima Aztecs 6, Mesa Thunderbirds 3

The Aztecs rallied in the 2nd inning and held off a Mesa rally to take the first game.

Down 1-0 in the 2nd inning, the Aztecs scored three runs to take the lead for good. Ponce hit an RBI double to drive in sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) to tie the game. Lopez-Bedoy hit a two-tun RBI single to bring around Ponce and Mendoza to cap off the inning.

Ponce hit RBI singles in the 3rd and 5th innings as the Aztecs took a 5-1 lead.

The Thunderbirds scored two runs in the 6th inning, but the Aztecs responded with an insurance run in the bottom-half of the 6th when Lopez hit an RBI single to score Rodriguez.
Ponce closed out the game going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Lopez-Bedoy went 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Lopez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rodriguez, Mendoza and Dehler each scored a run.

Adriana Machado picked up the win as she pitched a complete-game, giving up three runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks on 94 pitches.

Game 2: (10) Pima Aztecs 12, Mesa Thunderbirds 4 (6 innings)

Lopez hit a walk-off RBI single in the 6th inning to secure the run-rule victory for the Aztecs.

The Aztecs got the offense going early with six runs in the 1st inning. Dehler hit a two-run RBI double to plate sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) and Lopez to make it 3-0. After a Mendoza walk, Lyons and Lopez-Bedoy hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Lyons scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Rodriguez to make it 6-0.

Mesa scored three runs in the top of the 3rd inning, but the Aztecs responded with three of their own. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to score Mendoza while Rodriguez and Lopez hit RBI singles to make it 9-3.

The Aztecs scored another three runs in the 6th inning to earn the run-rule win. Freshman Kalia De Mello hit an RBI single to score Mendoza, and Lyons scored on an error to make it 11-4. Two batters later, Lopez ended the game with her walk-off.

Lyons finished a flawless 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored while Lopez went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Dehler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Mendoza was 2-for-2 with three runs. Rodriguez finished 1-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Lopez-Bedoy closed it out, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Brooklyn Machado picked up the win as she pitched four innings, giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks on 87 pitches.

The Aztecs will play an ACCAC conference doubleheader at Glendale Community College on Saturday at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m.
