(TUCSON, AZ) On Dec. 21, 1891 the sport of basketball was played for the first time in Springfield, Mass. On Dec. 21, 2018, Arizona women’s basketball will celebrate the birthday of the sport invented by Dr. James Naismith at that evening’s home game against Northern Arizona. The great-granddaughter of Naismith, Margaret Naismith Jonker, will be in attendance for the occasion.
Halftime will feature a Birthday of Basketball presentation, which includes an official proclamation from the Mayor of Tucson, Jonathan Rothschild, commemorating Arizona women’s basketball’s celebration of the Birthday of Basketball. The first 500 fans will receive a Birthday of Basketball poster with Dr. Naismith’s original 13 rules of the game.
Friday’s game will also be Daddy-Daughter Night. Arizona women’s basketball will host a special pre-game painting party for fathers and daughters. Cost for the painting party is $30 and includes two general admission tickets to the game and two canvases. Participants will receive instruction from a professional artist and access to painting supplies. The Daddy-Daughter Night painting party begins at 5:30 p.m. in the upper west concourse of McKale Center. Admission can be purchased by visiting ArizonaWildcats.com. Space is limited.
