Jake Applegate, Taylor Brown and Noah Macias break school records at Carvel Jackson Memorial Showcase

(Mesa, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s track & field team returned to action on Saturday at the inaugural Carvel Jackson Memorial Track & Field Showcase at Mesa Community College.

Sophomore Jake Applegate topped a 44-year mark as he broke the Pima Outdoor school record in the 400-meter hurdles after taking fourth place with a time of 51.44 seconds. He beat out Mark Campbell’s record of 51.93 set in 1982.
Applegate had previously held the No. 2 spot since last season with a time of 52.13.

Sophomore Taylor Brown toppled his own Pima Outdoor school record in the 400 meters as he took first place with a time of 46.47. Brown had set the previous standard last season at 46.55.

Freshman Noah Macias (Mica Mountain HS) now owns the Pima Outdoor school record in the 800-meters as he finished with a record-time of 1:50.93. He broke Stephen Bullard’s previous record of 1:51.16 set in 2009.

All three new records set by Applegate, Brown and Macias also improved their NJCAA national qualifying times.

The Aztecs set six new national qualifying times. Sophomore Brent Clark took second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and earned a new qualifying time of 9:17.38. His time put him at No. 4 in the Pima Outdoor all-time list.

Freshman Wyatt Nicholas tied for fifth place in the High Jump and secured a national qualifying mark with a jump of 2.02 meters (6-feet, 7.50-inches).

Freshman Jashon Wright earned his qualifier in the 400-meters after he placed seventh with a time of 47.80 seconds. His time put him No. 6 on the Pima all-time list.

Sophomore Jackson Koontz (Salpointe Catholic HS) secured his second national qualifier as he took eighth place in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 3:56.53. Koontz also has a national qualifier in the 5,000-meters.

Freshman Danny Knapp (Rio Rico HS) also owns his second NJCAA qualifier as he finished 10th in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:52.36. He earned a qualifier in the 4×800 meter relay.

Freshman Andrew Smith (Tanque Verde HS) closed out the 1,500-meter race in 12th place with a time of 3:58.24 to earn a national qualifying time for the race.

The Aztecs will compete in the ACCAC Conference Meet on Friday at Mesa Community College.
