Leon Cereceres has five hits but Aztecs Baseball gets swept against GateWay CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (19-18, 11-11 in ACCAC) closed out a busy week of six games as it hosted GateWay Community College (16-18, 10-12) on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The Aztecs dropped a pair of close games to the Geckos. Sophomore Leon Cereceres finished the day 5-for-8 with two RBIs and a run scored. Sophomore Ramon Martinez went 3-for-6 with two runs while sophomore Jackson Glueck was 3-for-9 with a run. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito closed out the day going 2-for-6 with an RBI and two runs. Sophomores Cam Grenert (Horizon HS) and Kai Fitak took the losses on the mound.

Game 1: GateWay Geckos 2, Pima Aztecs 1:

The Aztecs tied the game in the 3rd inning but the Geckos took the lead for good in the 6th inning.

Freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills HS) tied the game in the 3rd inning with his RBI single that scored Martinez, who was hit by a pitch to start it off.

Cereceres hit a lead-off single in the 7th inning and was sacrificed over to second base, but a lineout and a pop-up ended the game.

Cereceres finished the game 3-for-4 while Kruk went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Martinez was 1-for-2 with a run. Figueroa-Brito and freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe Catholic HS) each went 1-for-3.

Grenert took the loss in relief as he pitched two innings, giving up one run (one earned) on one hit with one strikeout. Sophomore Brady Hall didn’t get the decision but pitched five innings, giving up one run (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Game 2: GateWay Geckos 8, Pima Aztecs 7

The Geckos scored four runs in the 1st and the Aztecs were forced to play catch up. Pima rallied in the 9th inning but left the tying run on second base to end the game.

Trailing 8-4 in the 9th inning, the Aztecs got a lead-off triple from Martinez. He scored on Cereceres’ RBI single. Sophomore Matt MacDonald followed with an RBI double to make it 8-6. The Aztecs recorded two outs but were able to move MacDonald around the basepaths as he scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game. Figueroa-Brito was hit by a pitch to put the winning run at first base, but Guillen lined out to end it.

Cereceres also had an RBI single in the 2nd inning as he finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Martinez and sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro HS) each were 2-for-4 with a run. Figueroa-Brito closed out the game going 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Glueck finished 2-for-5 with a run.

Fitak took the loss as he pitched four and one-third innings, giving up six runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk on 82 pitches.

The Aztecs will get back to ACCAC conference play on Tuesday against Scottsdale Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 12:00 p.m.
