Aztecs Softball wins a pair of close games at Scottsdale CC

(Scottsdale, AZ)  The Pima Community College softball team (26-5, 20-4 in ACCAC) played some close games at Scottsdale Community College (15-14, 11-11) on Saturday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader.

Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) had a four-hit day as she finished 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS) also produced four hits as she was 4-for-8 with a run scored. Sophomores Sariah Ferrentino (Sabino HS) and Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) picked up the wins in the circle.

 

Game 1: (12) Pima Aztecs 6, Scottsdale Artichokes 5

The Aztecs held off a 7th inning rally as Camacho came in for relief and got two strikeouts to end the game as the Artichokes left the tying run stranded on second base.

The Aztecs took the lead with four runs in the 4th inning. Freshman Isabel Mendoza (Cienega HS) hit an RBI single that scored Lopez while freshman Tayah Lyons followed with an RBI single of her own to plate sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) as the Aztecs took a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Amerika Lopez-Bedoy (Sunnyside HS) capped off the inning with a two-run home run to center field to bring in Lyons as Pima led 4-0.

The Aztecs tacked on two runs in the top of the 7th. Lopez and Nunez hit back-to-back RBI singles to drive in freshman Angelina Dehler (Empire HS) and Figueroa respectively to make it 6-1.

The Artichokes scored four runs in the bottom of the 7tth.

Lopez finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Lopez-Bedoy closed it out, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Nunez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run while Lyons finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Ferrentino picked up the win as she pitched six and one-third innings, giving up five runs (five earned) on 12 hits with two strikeouts and four walks on 98 pitches. Camacho picked up her first save of the season after pitching two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts.

Game 2: (12) Pima Aztecs 7, Scottsdale Artichokes 6

The Aztecs thwarted another Scottsdale rally as Pima did their damage at the plate in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings.

The Aztecs rallied after the 1st inning as the bats came alive. Mendoza scored on Lopez-Bedoy’s sacrifice-bunt to put Pima on the scoreboard in the top of the 2nd inning. Freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) knocked an RBI double to bring in freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS).

Ponce came through on offense as she hit a three-run RBI double scoring Lopez, Nunez and Mendoza to put the Aztecs back up 5-4 in the 3rd inning.

Lopez hit a two-run RBI single to score Hendrix and freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) in the 4th inning to make it 7-4.

Ponce finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run. Lopez went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run while Mendoza was 1-for-3 with two runs. Figueroa was 2-for-4 for the game.

Camacho picked up the win in the circle going five and two-third innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on eight hits with six strikeouts and three walks on 97 pitches.

The Aztecs will play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
