(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College softball team (24-5, 18-4 in ACCAC) faced a tough test on Tuesday as it hosted an ACCAC conference doubleheader against South Mountain Community College (20-10, 16-6).
The Aztecs won the first game but dropped the second game. It was the second split with the Cougars this season as the teams also split the doubleheader at South Mountain on Feb. 14.
Sophomore Julissa Lopez (Tucson Magnet HS) closed out the day going 3-for-6 with five RBIs and two runs scored while freshman Izabel Rodriguez (Sahuarita HS) finished 4-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman Adriana Machado (Canyon del Oro HS) went 1-1 in the circle.

Game 1: (12) Pima Aztecs 7, (14) South Mountain Cougars 4
The Aztecs took an early lead and held off a Cougars’ rally.
Lopez hit a two-run RBI double in the 1st inning to bring in freshman Alyssa Aguirre (Sabino HS) and sophomore Clarissa Figueroa (Mountain View HS). Lopez scored to make it 3-0 after freshman Isabel Mendoza’s (Cienega HS) sacrifice-fly RBI.
Aguirre hit an RBI single to score Rodriguez, who led off the 2nd inning with a single.
Lopez took the first pitch she saw in the 3rd inning and drove it over the left field fence to put Pima up 5-1.
Aguirre scored on a fielder’s choice in the 4th inning to make it 6-2. The Aztecs tacked on one more run in the 5thinning when freshman Kayla Hendrix (Canyon del Oro HS) grounded out, but scored in freshman Soleil Ponce (Sunnyside HS).
Lopez closed out the game, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a home run and a double. Aguirre went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs. Figueroa was 2-for-4 with a run while Rodriguez finished 2-for-3 with a run.
Machado picked up the win in the circle as she pitched four and two-third innings, giving up four runs (four earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks on 95 pitches. Sophomore Belen Camacho (Pueblo HS) picked up her first save of the season as she threw the final two and one-third innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

Game 2: (14) South Mountain Cougars 11, (12) Pima Aztecs
The Cougars scored three runs in the 1st inning and four in the 2nd inning as the Aztecs couldn’t catch up in the second game.
Rodriguez put the Aztecs on the scoreboard when she hit an RBI single to score Ponce, who led off the inning with a double.
Sophomore Jiselle Nunez (Tucson Magnet HS) left her mark in the 3rd inning with a lead-off home run to left field on the first pitch she saw but the Aztecs still trailed 8-2.
Hendrix drew a walk to lead off the 4th inning and scored off of Nunez’s sacrifice-fly RBI.
Nunez finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hendrix was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk. Ponce finished 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double and a triple.
Machado took the loss in the circle as she pitched one and one-third innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits with one walk on 31 pitches.

The Aztecs will be back in action on Saturday when they play at Scottsdale Community College in an ACCAC conference doubleheader. The first game will start at 11:00 a.m.
