Ramon Martinez has three RBIs as Baseball splits at Paradise Valley

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (18-13, 11-9 in ACCAC) played at Paradise Valley Community College (12-21, 7-13) on Saturday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader.

The No. 25 ranked Aztecs split their fifth ACCAC doubleheader as they went 1-1 against the Pumas. Sophomore Ramon Martinez closed out the day going 4-for-7 with three RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito finished 2-for-7 with an RBI and three runs scored. Sophomore Cam Grenert (Horizon HS) picked up the win in a relief appearance while sophomore Brady Hall took the loss in his relief outing.

Game 1: (25) Pima Aztecs 9, Paradise Valley Pumas 5

The Aztecs rallied from two deficits and scored five runs in the 5th inning to help secure the win in the first game.

Down 3-0 after the 1st inning, the Aztecs tied the game with three runs in the 3rd inning. The Pumas retook the lead in the 4th inning to go up 4-3 but the Aztecs scored five runs to take the lead for good.

Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View HS) finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Freshman Ezra Vidal (Sahuarita HS) and Figueroa-Brito each had an RBI and two runs scored. Martinez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.

Grenert picked up the win as he pitched three and one-third innings, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with three strikeouts on 39 pitches.

Game 2: Paradise Valley Pumas 8, (25) Pima Aztecs 7

The Aztecs fell on a walk-off RBI single in the 9th inning in the back and forth contest that saw five lead changes.

Sophomore Leon Cereceres scored on an error in the 1st inning, but the Pumas took their first lead with three runs in the 2nd inning.

The Aztecs loaded the bases with three straight RBI singles to start off the 4th inning. Sophomore Mike Jones (Canyon del Oro HS) hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to bring in sophomore Jackson Glueck. Freshman Westin Thompson hit a ground-out, but it scored freshman Owen Wade (Pinnacle HS) to tie the game at 3-3. Martinez broke the tie with an RBI single to score Figueroa-Brito.

Trailing 5-4, the Aztecs rallied back again in the 7th inning as Lorta drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Cereceres, which tied the game at 5-5. Jones drew another bases-loaded walk to bring in freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills HS) as Pima grabbed a 6-5 lead.

The Pumas tied it in the bottom of the 6th but Pima went up once again in the 8th inning as Glueck drew a bases loaded walk to score Cereceres. The Pumas tied the game in the bottom of the 8th and won it in the 9th.

Cereceres finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs while Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Glueck was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Hall took the loss as he pitched one-third of an inning, giving up one run (one earned) on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

The Aztecs play their next six games at the West Campus Aztec Field. They will host Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday in an ACCAC conference doubleheader.
