Kiley Sours-Miller surpasses 1,000 career points at Pima, Women’s Basketball topples Mesa College

(Mesa, AZ). The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (18-4, 10-2 in ACCAC) picked up a big win on the road on Saturday and took over first place in the ACCAC Division II standings.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs defeated No. 11 Mesa Community College 76-69 earning their sixth straight win and ninth victory in their last 10 games.

The Thunderbirds hit a three-pointer to take a 52-50 advantage in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but the Aztecs responded with a 15-1 run capped off by sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller’s (Dream City Christian) basket to make it 65-53 with 4:51 left.

The Thunderbirds countered with a 13-3 run of their own to cut Pima’s lead to two points at 68-66, but Sours-Miller halted the momentum with a basket inside to make it 70-66 with 1:23 remaining.

After a missed three-pointer, freshman Kahlia Gonzales (Mesquite HS) grabbed a crucial defensive rebound. Freshman Nevaeh Urenda (Flowing Wells HS) missed a three-pointer, but sophomore Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) snagged the offensive board and scored to make it 72-66 with 44 seconds left.

Nelson and Urenda converted on their free throws to help close out the game.

Sours-Miller sat at 990 points at the start of the game. She surpassed the feat with 2:21 left in the second quarter with a layup to make it 29-24. She finished the game with her ninth double-double of the season with 25 points (1,015 points) and 10 rebounds.

Nelson closed out the game with a triple-double of 16 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to go with five steals and one block.

Freshman Reigne Waugh and sophomore Lucy Land each scored 10 points while Gonzales went 3 for 5 from beyond the arc for nine points along with three rebounds and four assists.

The Aztecs will be back on the court next Saturday when they play their third straight road game at Scottsdale Community College. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
