Tucson, AZ –The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (9-3, 3-1 in ACCAC) suffered its first ACCAC conference blemish on the season in a tough matchup on Wednesday at Scottsdale Community College (7-4, 2-2).
The No. 5 ranked Aztecs fell to the Artichokes 67-61, snapping their seven-game winning streak.
Down 43-34, the Aztecs took the lead back after putting together a 14-2 run in five minutes between the third and fourth quarters to take a 48-45 lead. Freshman Reigne Waugh scored nine points during that stretch.
Waugh converted on a pair of free throws to give the Aztecs their biggest lead of the game at 57-52 with 2:38remaining. The Artichokes scored the next eight points and went on to outscore Pima 15-4 to close out the game.
The Aztecs led in the first quarter 12-9 but Scottsdale went on a 9-0 to retake the lead at 18-12 in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Pima trailed 28-23 at halftime.
Waugh scored a team-high 15 points while sophomore Kiley Sours-Miller (Dream City Christian) finished with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds. She also had five blocks for the game.
Sophomore Melicia Nelson (Window Rock HS) closed out the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Sophomore Lucy Land had six points and four rebounds, and freshman Lucy Fisher (Mesquite HS) posted five points and five rebounds.
The Aztecs shot 38.6 percent from the field (22 for 57) and were 0 for 6 from three-point range. The Aztecs had 29 turnovers.
The Aztecs will be on winter break and will return to the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Monday, Dec. 29 when they host Cochise College in the Aztec Winter Classic. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
