(Culiacán, Sinaloa) Nine innings weren’t enough in Culiacán when the Tomateros and Tucson faced off in the second game of their series in the Sinaloa capital.
It was a tremendous pitching duel in which both offenses were silenced by the pitchers who battled to prevent any major damage.
It was Tucson who put some color on the scoreboard, scoring in the fourth inning with Gaige Hoeard’s first home run of the season off Manny Barreda, giving his team a 1-0 lead.
The Guindas tied the game in the same way Tucson had, with a solo home run by Luis Verdugo in the bottom of the seventh inning off starter Mark Simon, who had a quality outing in his debut with the Arizona team, pitching 6 2/3 innings with 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 run, and only 4 hits.
In the ninth, after a tremendous trick play by Jesús Fabela for the second out, Samar Leyva couldn’t field a ground ball to shortstop, allowing Luis Verdugo to score the winning run for the home team, making it 2-1 after 10 innings.
The losing pitcher was Christian Edwards, who had the bases loaded with only 1 out in the final inning.
