Gutierrez scores 15th and 16th goals of the season as Men’s Soccer wins 10th consecutive game

(Phoenix, AZ)  The Pima Community College men’s soccer team (12-1, 9-1 in ACCAC) played a rare morning match against GateWay Community College (0-10-2, 0-9-1) on Friday at South Mountain Community College. 

The No. 4 ranked Aztecs got their sixth shutout victory of the season after beating the Geckos 4-0. The win secured a spot for Pima in the Region I Playoffs for the 30th straight year according to David Cosgrove.

Freshman Leonel Gutierrez (Salpointe Catholic HS) scored his 15th and 16th goals of the season in the 49th and 70th minutes. Sophomore Lae Soe (Cortez HS) and freshman Diegoctavio Garcia Yanez (Salpointe Catholic HS) provided the respected assists.

Sophomore Nathan Flores (Alhambra HS) had two assists in the game. He found freshman Alek Peral (Nogales HS) for his goal in the 34th minute to put the Aztecs on the scoreboard and provided the dish to sophomore Joost Hermeling for his goal in the 77th minute.

The Aztecs outshot the Geckos 20-0. Sophomore Alex Cristerna Oleta (Tucson Magnet HS) played the first half and freshman Tommaso Leonardi took over in the second half. Both goalkeepers had no saves.

The Aztecs beat the Geckos 4-0 in their first meeting on Sept. 13 at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The Aztecs will head back out on the road on Tuesday when they play at Glendale Community College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
