(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (6-1-4, 6-0-3 in ACCAC) got back in the win column on Tuesday as it hosted Chandler-Gilbert Community College (3-6, 3-5) in ACCAC conference action.
The No. 10 ranked Aztecs scored three unanswered goals in the second half to beat the Coyotes 5-1. They swept the regular season meetings with Chandler-Gilbert, beating them 3-0 on Sept. 9 in Chandler.
Freshman Yajaira Cervantes (Tucson Magnet HS) played her part in assisting both of Pima’s goals in the first half. Sophomore Samantha Mendez (Tucson Magnet HS) put the Aztecs on the board in the 6th minute. Sophomore Ashley Martinez (Sunnyside HS) made it 2-0 with her goal in the 10th minute.
The Coyotes cut Pima’s lead in half in the 58th minute with a goal by Alivia Waite.
The Aztecs responded as Mendez netted her second goal of the game and Cervantes provided her third assist in the 66th minute.
Sophomore Savannah Michel (Walden Grove HS) scored her first goal of the season with her shot in the 86thminute to make it 4-1. Sophomore Marissa Garate (Tucson Magnet HS) helped put the game away with her goal a minute later in the 87th minute. Freshman Ava Dagnino (Salpointe Catholic HS) had the assist.
The Aztecs finished with 16 shots on goal as the Coyotes finished with four. Sophomore Brooke Valencia (Sabino HS) closed out the game with three saves. Freshman Angelina Moraga (Sabino HS) played the second half and recorded no saves.
The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field on Thursday when they host a non-conference game against Cochise College. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m.
