Aztecs Women’s Soccer scores six goals in the second half to overwhelm Mesa CC

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (5-1-3, 5-0-2 in ACCAC) hosted Mesa Community College (2-7-1, 1-5-1) on Saturday in ACCAC conference action at the West Campus Aztec Field.

The No. 9 ranked Aztecs held a slim lead after the first half of play, but the offense dominated with six goals in the second half to beat the Thunderbirds 8-1. The Aztecs are 5-0-1 in their last six games.

The Aztecs had 10 different players score points for the game. Sophomore Samantha Mendez (Tucson Magnet HS) and freshman Hannah Romero (Tucson Magnet HS) each scored two goals. Mendez scored the first two goals of the second half and a little over one minute apartment in the 57^th and 58^th minutes to give Pima a 4-1 advantage. Romero netted the final two Pima goals of the game in the 85^th and 88^th minutes.

Sophomore Kristal Navarro (Tucson Magnet HS) and freshman Gabriela Mendoza (Tucson Magnet HS) each distributed two assists.

Freshman Yajaira Cervantes (Tucson Magnet HS) scored the first goal of the game in the 12^th minute and assisted in sophomore Ashley Martinez’s (Sunnyside HS) goal in the 64^th minute to make it 5-1.

Sophomore Marissa Garate (Tucson Magnet HS) played her first game of the season and made an impact with a free kick goal in the 77^th minute to make it 6-1.

Freshman Karina Tapia (Sabino HS) scored her goal in the 32^nd minute. Freshman Ava Dagnino (Salpointe Catholic HS) and sophomore Anjeli DesRosier (Salpointe Catholic HS) each had one assist in the game.

The Aztecs finished with 16 shots on goal and held the Thunderbirds to two for the game. Freshman Angelina Moraga (Sabino HS) closed out the game with two saves.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Field next Saturday, Oct. 4 when they start the second half of the season against rival Phoenix College. Game time is set for 5:45 p.m. The Aztecs and the Bears tied at 1-1 in their first meeting on Sept. 6.
