Aztecs Volleyball tie the match but fall in four sets to Chandler-Gilbert Community College

(Tucson, AZ)  The Pima Community College volleyball team (5-9, 2-3 in ACCAC) was back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Friday as it faced off with Chandler-Gilbert Community College (7-4, 2-3).

The Aztecs battled back tying the match at 1-1 but the Coyotes secured the next two games, beating the Aztecs in four sets (25-14, 13-25, 25-23, 25-22).

The Aztecs fell behind in the first set, trailing 9-3 early but scored four of the next five points, as freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) had a kill and freshman Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) had an ace to cut the deficit to 10-7. The Coyotes took control as they scored eight of the next 10 points and took their first double digit lead at 21-11 to help win the opening set.

The Aztecs surrendered the first three points of the second set but rallied off nine of the next 10 points as sophomores Maggie McReynolds (Mountain View HS), Ava Harrelson-Cybulski and Julia Baird produced the points for Pima during that stretch. The Aztecs continued to dominate the set as they took their first double digit lead at 16-6 after McReynolds put down another spike. Pima led by as much as 12 points to tie the match at 1-1.

The Aztecs fell behind in the opening 11 points of the third set. With the score tied at 6-6 the Aztecs and the Coyotes put on a clinic for the next 32 points. Neither team held more than a one-point advantage. The Aztecs fell behind 23-21 and called timeout. McReynolds had another kill and a Chandler-Gilbert miscue tied it again at 23-23. The Coyotes won the next two points to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The third set featured 16 ties and 10 lead changes.

Pima held a pair of one-point leads as sophomore Kendall Snyder (Canyon del Oro HS) had a block at the net for the first point of the set and McReynolds’ ace put Pima up 5-4 but the Coyotes held the advantage the rest of the way. Chandler-Gilbert led by as much as six points. Down 18-13, the Aztecs scored four straight points to cut it to a one-point deficit at 18-17. The Coyotes scored the next three, but the Aztecs rallied again and tied the match at 21-21 forcing Chandler-Gilbert to call timeout. The Coyotes scored the next four of five points to secure the win.

McReynolds had a team-high 11 kills to go with three aces. Hutchens closed out the match with eight kills while Harrelson-Cybulski came off the bench and finished with six kills. Baird added five kills and two blocks.

The Aztecs will be back at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium next Friday, Oct. 3 when they host Glendale Community College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
