(Tucson, AZ) The Pima Community College volleyball team (16-14) avoided elimination in the second day of the NJCAA Region I, Division II as it won two matches on Friday in Phoenix to advance.
The No. 4 seeded Aztecs beat No. 2 Glendale Community College in four sets 25-18, 26-24, 21-25, 25-20 to earn a spot in the championship round on Saturday. It was Pima’s first time beating Glendale this season.
The Aztecs started the day by defeating Mesa Community College in four sets 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20.
Sophomore Kaitlin Schmich (Mountain View HS) had 22 assists, eight digs, five kills, two blocks and an ace. Fellow sophomore Lyrica Tavesi (Pima HS) had 11 kills while freshman Jade Romine (Canyon del Oro HS) finished with eight kills and 13 digs.
The Aztecs will play against host and No. 1 seeded South Mountain Community College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. If Pima wins, the two teams will square off again 45 minutes after the first match concludes to decide the Region I, Division II champion.
