Aztecs Baseball drops Game One of Region Finals at South Mountain CC

(Phoenix, AZ)  The Pima Community College baseball team (47-12) opened play in the Region I, Division II Finals on Thursday at South Mountain Community College (44-16).

The No. 2 seeded Aztecs fell to the No. 1 seeded Cougars 9-1 in seven innings. The Cougars have a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

L – Gray (7-2).

Trailing 2-0, the Aztecs got on the board in the 3rd inning. Sophomore Andrew Grenert (Horizon HS) reached base on a single with two outs. He moved over to second on an error. Freshman Leon Cereceres brought him in with an RBI single to cut South Mountain’s lead in half.

The Cougars went on to score seven unanswered runs. The Aztecs had 11 of their final 13 batters retired. The other two drew walks. Pima’s three through eight in the batting order went 0 for 15 in the game.

Cereceres finished 1 for 2 with an RBI while Grenert went 1 for 2 with a run. Sophomore Caden Richards closed it out going 1 for 2 with a walk.

Sophomore Nate Gray (Queen Creek HS) took the loss as he pitched five innings, giving up seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk on 83 pitches.

The Aztecs will play Game 2 at South Mountain Community College on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
