Cedric Cade (Decathlon) and Connor Grusendorf (10,000 meters) capture Region I crowns

(Mesa, AZ) The Pima Community College men’s track & field team opened the postseason on Monday and Tuesday at the Region I Multi and 10,000-meter Championships at Mesa Community College.

The No. 6 ranked Aztecs finished the first two days with a total of 45 points that will carry over to next week’s competition. Mesa Community College sits in second place with 17 points and Central Arizona College is third with 10 points.

Freshman Cedric Cade secured the Region I Championship in the Decathlon as he finished with 5,797 points (earning 10 team points for the Aztecs). He took first place in six of the 10 events: 100 meters (11.81 seconds), Long Jump (6.47 meters), Shot Put (11.29 meters), 110-meter hurdles (16.50), Discus (32.67 meters) and Javelin (48.66 meters).
The Aztecs scored 27 total points in the Decathlon as freshman Malachi Keller (Tombstone HS) finished in second place with 5,363 points gaining eight points for Pima. Freshman Laurel Bukuru placed fourth with 4,522 points (five team points) and David Kagabo (Catalina HS) took fifth place with 3,706 points (four team points).

Freshman Connor Grusendorf (Mica Mountain HS) won the 10,000-meter race with a time of 32:05.50 earning an NJCAA national qualifying time and 10 points for the Aztecs.
Freshman Jackson Koontz (Salpointe Catholic HS) picked up eight team points as he took second place in the 10,000-meters race, crossing the finish line at 32:12.46.

The Aztecs will continue competition at the Region I Championships on Tuesday, April 29 and Thursday, May 1 at Mesa Community College. Events will begin at 5:00 p.m. each day.
