Sun Devils score five runs in the sixth in road win
(Salt Lake City, UT) A five-run sixth inning created the separation needed for Sun Devil Softball to down Utah 7-2 on Friday evening in the first of three games between the teams this weekend.
Arizona State (29-14, 9-7 Big 12) took a lead on an RBI single from Samantha Swan in the second inning, only to see Utah (12-28, 4-9) counter with two runs in the bottom of the frame. ASU quickly pulled even in the third when Ashleigh Mejia drove home a run with a groundout.
Pitching took over until the sixth when the Sun Devils broke through to take the lead back. Swan drove home the go-ahead run with a single to left center. After Takyla Davis walked to load the bases, Tiare Ho-Ching punched a shot to right-center to score two more runs for the Sun Devils. ASU added a run on a double steal and then capped the scoring with an RBI hit from Yannixa Acuña.
Swan finished the game with three hits to lead the team’s nine-hit attack. Tanya Windle added two hits with Ayden Allen’s fourth-inning double the team’s only extra-base hit.
