(Colorado Springs, CO) Sun Devil Hockey forward Kyle Smolen was named NCHC Forward of the Week after tallying three points against then-No. 3 Western Michigan last weekend, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Smolen scored two goals, one on each night of the series versus the Broncos, and an assist on Friday’s game-winning goal. This is the first time Smolen has won the conference’s weekly honor.
Smolen propelled the Sun Devils to a 5-3 victory over the Broncos, setting up Jackson’s game-winning goal and adding his own empty-net goal off a nifty faceoff win the ASU defensive zone. The win handed the Broncos their first regulation loss in the NCHC this season. Following his impressive two-point outing in game one against the league’s leading team, he scored the first goal of the game the next day, though the Sun Devils ultimately fell in overtime by a score of 4-3.
He fired four shots on goal, posted a +2 plus/minus and did not commit a penalty on the weekend. On the season, Smolen now has 29 points (12g/17a) in 32 games, tying for 10th in the NCHC in scoring. He is currently on a three-game goal streak and five-game point scoring streak.
