(Fort Worth, TX) After putting on an offensive display the day before, the Park University Gilbert baseball team might have wondered if they should have saved some of the offense from Friday for today. The Buccaneers were swept by Texas Wesleyan University 9-0 and 14-1 this afternoon in Fort Worth, Texas.
Game 1- Texas Wesleyan 9, Park Gilbert 0
After scoring 24 runs on 24 hits in game two on Friday, the Bucs struggled to buy a hit on Saturday. Park Gilbert only managed one hit and one walk against TWU starter Samuel Mendez (3-0) who went the distance and struck out 10.
The Buccaneers only rally in game one came in the fifth. Jesh Leckey broke up the no-hitter with a single to center, Nick Miller followed with a walk and Isaac Echeveste was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded Andrew Allanson stuck out and Caleb Rozier grounded out to the pitcher to end the only threat of the day.
Bucs starting pitcher Hayden King (0-2) struggled giving up nine hits and six runs (five earned) in two innings. Mike Short came on and allowed the final three runs in 1 1/3 innings. Ethan Osness threw the final 2 2/3 innings not allowing a run.
Game 2 – Texas Wesleyan 14, Park Gilbert 1
The Bucs again struggled at the plate only putting three hits on the board. The first came in the fourth inning off the bat of designated hitter Jason Newton and the last two came in the seventh when the Bucs put their only run of the day on the board. Rees Hall and Enrique Figueroa got the other two hits. The Bucs also had two walks in the game.
Starting pitcher Isaiah Csader (1-1) took the loss allowing five runs and five hits in 2 ½ innings. The Bucs used five relievers, three of which allowed nine more runs. Caden Griffin and Jesh Leckey each threw a scoreless inning.
The Bucs return to Arizona for their next game another road contest against Nelson University on Tuesday, February 18 at 6 p.m. at Indian School Park in Scottsdale, Arizona.
